What is upper gastrointestinal (upper GI) cancer?

Upper GI cancer includes:

  • oesophageal cancer
  • stomach cancer
  • pancreatic cancer
  • duodenal cancer
  • gall bladder
  • bile duct cancer
  • liver cancer and
  • small bowel cancer

Symptoms can include:

  • difficulty swallowing
  • persistent indigestion or heartburn
  • bringing up food soon after eating
  • loss of appetite and weight loss
  • pain or discomfort in your upper tummy, chest or back

What to do if you’re worried

If you have any of these symptoms, and lifestyle changes or pharmacy medicines are not helping, speak to your GP in the first instance.

These symptoms are very common and can be caused by many different conditions. Having them does not definitely mean you have stomach cancer.

But it’s important to get them checked by a GP. This is because if they’re caused by cancer, finding it early makes it more treatable.
