Introduction into preparing for adulthood

Planning for the future, life changes, developing and gaining skills and knowledge for future independence is important in a young person’s life.

‘Preparing for adulthood’ means moving from childhood into adult life, this is used by professionals to describe the changes in services when a child becomes an adult, to help define what needs to happen to support the young person to have a successful transition into adulthood.

It is to help build those steppingstones for young people to prepare them for the move from school or college to a successful and independent adult life, whether this is into further education, employment, supported internship, training or volunteering.

This maybe applicable to young people who are already receiving care and support from Health and Social Care services and/or those who may require care and support once they turn 18.

We strive to ensure that the young person, their families and professionals work together so that the young person is always at the centre of planning for their future.

We hope you will find the resources here helpful in assisting you in your practice and enhancing your knowledge of the Preparing for Adulthood pathway.
