Vaccines are the most effective way to prevent many infectious diseases and prevent millions of deaths worldwide every year. Since vaccines were introduced in the UK, diseases like smallpox, polio and tetanus that used to kill or disable millions of people are either gone or are now very rarely seen.

Vaccines offer protection to ourselves and our children by teaching our immune systems how to create antibodies that protect us from diseases. It is much safer for our immune systems to learn this through vaccination than by catching diseases and treating them. Once your immune system knows how to fight a disease, it can give life-long protection.
