Preventing falls – Stay steady, stay independent

Anyone can have a fall, but it’s more likely as you get older or if you have problems with balance or mobility.

How to reduce your risk of falling

1. Stay active and improve your strength and balance

Being active is one of the best ways to prevent falls. Try to:

  • Move more each day
  • Include activities that improve strength and balance at least twice a week
  • Look for gentle exercises, walking, or seated balance exercises you can do at home or in a class

These activities can help you feel steadier on your feet.

2. Make your home safer

Simple changes at home can help reduce the risk of trips and slips. Tips include:

  • Keep floors free from clutter
  • Remove loose rugs or trailing wires
  • Make sure stairs and hallways are well lit
  • Use non-slip mats in baths and showers
  • Consider fitting grab-rails on steps or in the bathroom.

These small changes can make a big difference to staying safe at home.

3. Look after your health

Keeping your health in check can help reduce your risk of falling. The NHS recommends that you:

  • Have regular eye tests and get your hearing checked
  • Eat well and keep hydrated, as feeling weak or dizzy can increase your risk of falling
  • Speak to your GP or pharmacist if you think your medicines might make you feel unsteady.

What to do if you fall

If you do have a fall, try to stay calm and assess how you feel.

If you think you can get up:

  1. Roll onto your side
  2. Get onto your hands and knees
  3. Use something sturdy to help you stand
  4. Sit down and rest.

If you cannot get up:

  • Use a phone or alarm to call for help
  • Try to keep warm
  • Move your arms or legs if you can.

Use NHS 111 (online or by phone) if:

  • You feel unwell after a fall
  • You are not sure what to do.

Call 999 if:

  • You are injured
  • You cannot get up
  • You are in severe pain.
