As the Easter bank holiday is just around the corner, the NHS is urging you to be prepared. There’s a few steps you can take in advance to ensure you have the right healthcare advice and necessary medication to stay well over the long weekend.

Dr Edmondson-Jones, Chief Medical Officer in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, said:

“Bank holiday weekends can be a busy time for healthcare services, with higher volumes ofcalls to NHS 111 about medication shortages and minor illnesses. By planning ahead, you can avoid unnecessary stress and help to ease pressure on the NHS.”

GP practices and pharmacies may have reduced opening hours over this period, so follow these simple steps to ensure you are prepared:

  • Check that you have enough essential medications, especially if you have a chronic long-term condition like asthma, diabetes, or high blood pressure. Be sure to stock up on inhalers, insulin, or any other regular prescriptions you need.
  • Remind family members to check their medication supplies – especially elderly relatives and those with long-term conditions.
  • Request repeat prescriptions at least seven days in advance for timely processing. The NHS App is the most convenient way to do this.
  • Check when your local pharmacies will be open.
  • Restock your first aid kit or medicine cabinet with painkillers, cold and flu remedies, antihistamines, bandages and plasters.
  • Keep a list of emergency contacts.

Remember that NHS 111 can help with urgent but non-emergency medical issues – visit 111.nhs.uk or call 111. Trained professionals are available 24/7 to advise on your healthcare needs.

Pharmacists can provide expert advice on minor illnesses such as coughs, colds, and stomach upsets. Many pharmacies will be open for part of the Easter weekend, but check opening times using the ‘Find a Pharmacy’ service on the NHS website.

Share this information with friends and community groups to help ensure everyone stays safe and healthy over the Easter weekend. The NHS is here to help—do make the most of the services available to you.
