Sunshine and self-care: NHS urges residents to prepare ahead of the early May bank holiday weekend

With the Early May Bank Holiday on Monday 5 May fast approaching and warm and sunny weather on the cards, the NHS in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent is encouraging local residents to plan ahead, take simple steps to stay safe, stock up, and make the most of the break.

The extended weekend can often lead to increased demand on local NHS services, particularly from people running out of regular medication or seeking help for minor issues that could have been prevented.

Dr Paul Edmondson-Jones, Chief Medical Officer for NHS Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, said:

“Bank holidays are a welcome chance to relax, especially when the sun is shining, but they can also put added pressure on NHS services. A few minutes of planning – like ordering repeat prescriptions, checking your medicine cabinet, or stocking up on sun cream – can help you stay well and avoid unnecessary stress over the weekend.”

“Please check in on elderly relatives, keep yourself hydrated in the warmer weather, and remember that NHS 111 is available around the clock for urgent – but not life-threatening – medical advice.”

To prepare for the bank holiday on Monday May 5, the NHS is urging people to:

  • Order any repeat prescriptions now, especially if you have a long-term condition like asthma, diabetes or high blood pressure. Use the NHS App for quick and easy ordering.
  • Check your medicine cabinet and stock up on essentials such as paracetamol, antihistamines, plasters, and treatments for colds, hay fever or minor stomach issues.
  • Be sun smart – apply sun cream regularly, wear a hat, and avoid direct sun during peak hours.
  • Stay hydrated, particularly if spending time outdoors or travelling.
  • Look out for vulnerable people, especially elderly relatives or neighbours who may need support with medication or staying cool.
  • Know your local pharmacy opening hours – some pharmacies will be open for part of the weekend. Check using the ‘Find a Pharmacy’ service on the NHS website.
  • Use NHS 111 for urgent but non-emergency medical help – available 24/7 at 111.nhs.uk or by calling 111.

Pharmacists can provide expert advice on minor illnesses including coughs, colds, and upset stomachs – without the need for a GP appointment.

The NHS is encouraging people to share this advice with friends, family, and community groups to help everyone stay healthy, prepared, and able to enjoy the long weekend safely.
