Your Continued Health and Medical Care Over the August Bank Holiday

With the August Bank Holiday fast approaching, the NHS is urging patients to plan ahead to ensure continued uninterrupted medical care. Some GP practices and pharmacies will have reduced opening hours during the period.

If you require medical advice or assistance but it’s not an emergency, you can use the NHS 111 service by visiting 111.nhs.uk or call 111 to speak to a trained healthcare professional who will guide you on the best course of action.

To further prepare, we encourage you to order repeat prescriptions in advance. Check your medication supplies and order any necessary repeats at least a week before they run out. This will allow enough time for prescriptions to be processed and for any potential issues to be addressed before the holidays.

Amin Mitha, Associate Director of Medicines Optimisation said ‘During Bank Holiday periods, it is common for NHS 111 to receive an increase in calls related to medication supply issues. To alleviate the pressure on NHS services, we can all take proactive steps. Restocking medicines for minor ailments and ensuring timely ordering of repeat prescriptions are essential to avoid medication shortages during the holidays. The NHS App provides the most convenient way to request repeat medicines from your practice.

Running out of medication for some long-term conditions like Asthma and Diabetes may result in serious complications and hospital admissions. This situation can be avoided by ensuring that there is sufficient medication at home to cover the holiday period. It is good practice to allow seven days from ordering before collecting your prescription, providing sufficient time for your GP practice and pharmacy to have it ready for you.
